Nestbox Challenge

The Nestbox Challenge on Saturday 17th February was a great success!!

Organised by BBC Radio Oxford and the BTO Rodney and Jeanne Davies were members of the team based at Tesco in Cowley Retail park.

They were giving away 200 nestboxes to encourage people to increase the number of birds nesting in gardens.

This was part of a nationwide campaign which gave away 10,000 nest boxes to people throughout the country.

Jeanne and Rodney are pictured with Peter from BBONT and John from the BTO.

Mark Crockford

My name is Mark Crockford and I belong to the Vale of White Horse Bird Group and I am interested in badgers. I travel all over the country in pursuit of my hobbies which are bird and badger watching.

The Latin name of the badger is meles meles. The male is called a boar and the female a sow. They live in family groups called clans where the territory is marked by dung pits. Their home is called a sett and they use runs which are called up and over. They eat insects, rodents, berries and earthworms.

When I go badger watching I often see roe deer, muntjac and fox also owls – barn, little and tawny, raptors such as buzzards, red kite, sparrowhawk and kestrel. Other birds such as redwing, fieldfare, yellowhammer, willow warbler and goldfinch.

In the George and Dragon they call me the “badger man”.
