Mark Crockford
My name is Mark Crockford and I belong to the Vale of White Horse
Bird Group and I am interested in badgers. I travel all over the country
in pursuit of my hobbies which are bird and badger watching.
The Latin name of the badger is meles meles. The male is called
a boar and the female a sow. They live in family groups called clans
where the territory is marked by dung pits. Their home is called a sett
and they use runs which are called up and over. They eat insects, rodents,
berries and earthworms.
When I go badger watching I often see roe deer, muntjac and fox also
owls – barn, little and tawny, raptors such as buzzards, red kite, sparrowhawk
and kestrel. Other birds such as redwing, fieldfare, yellowhammer, willow
warbler and goldfinch.
In the George and Dragon they call me the “badger man”.
